· South Korea has again suspended imports from the U.S. after a box of bone in short loins was discovered.  The bone in the short loins is a part of the vertebral column which is classified at specified risk material.  It is unknown when exports will resume.

· Can a natural ingredient, like cranberries, reduce the growth of bacteria in ground beef?  According to Meatingplace.com, a study done at the University of Maine found that adding cranberry concentrate to ground beef significantly reduced the growth of salmonella, E.coli and other dangerous bacteria in the beef – all without affecting the taste.

· On August 10th the USDA will release the U.S. corn yield estimates; expectations are for the estimation for the yield to come in between 150 and 153 bushels/acre.

·  According to Cattle-Fax, from 2008-2010, the U.S. dairy cow herd is expected to slightly increase – a result of the high prices we’re seeing in milk and dairy products.

· Hog futures have been pushed much lower already this week – mostly due to many people believing that the exports of U.S. pork to China will be much smaller than originally anticipated.  With the hog pit seeing such a sell off, the live cattle market has followed suit, too.  The corn market saw gains today and pushed feeder cattle prices lower.

· What’s the good news about the losses in the live cattle futures today?  With this move, we are much closer to the average basis level we typically see this time of year.

·  Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling is part of the 2007 Farm Bill.  The following are labels that will apply to beef, pork, lamb and goat:

o       U.S. Country of Origin label for product was born, raised and slaughtered in the United States

o       Mixed Origin label for product not exclusively born, raised and slaughtered in the U.S.

o       Imported Meat label for products entirely derived from foreign countries

o       Ground meat product can be labeled with a list of countries where product may have originated
